8.13 LOOKING AHEAD

RF measurements and calculations acquire regulatory meaning when they are compared with the restrictions, reference levels, and assessment provisions in an applicable RF safety standard. Chapter 9 explains how scientific evidence and protection principles are translated into those practical criteria.

The chapter introduces the principal frameworks used in RF safety, including the ICNIRP Guidelines, IEEE standards, and ARPANSA RPS S-1. It examines distinctions between worker and general-public exposure, the roles of basic restrictions and reference levels, time and spatial averaging, multiple-source summation, and restrictions for brief or peak exposures.

Chapter 10 then turns from assessment criteria to implementation. It explains how engineering controls, administrative controls, exclusion zones, training, records, and periodic review are combined in an effective RF safety program.
