10.11.2 Different Levels Of Training
The content and depth of training should match the person's RPS S-1 exposure category, activity, risk, and responsibility. For example:
- RF Workers require training for the RF exposure intrinsic to their work and the controls and safe work practices they use;
- Controlled Area Workers require information, training, and instruction appropriate to the activities they perform in the Controlled Area;
- Aware Users require instruction on the potential exposure from their portable wireless devices and the measures used to control it;
- Responsible Persons, supervisors, source operators, and RF assessors require additional competence for their management, authorization, coordination, or technical decisions;
- contractors must be classified and trained according to their work and potential exposure, as well as receiving site-specific information; and
- Supervised Visitors require sufficient information for safe transit and must remain under the direct supervision of a Responsible Person, RF Worker, or Controlled Area Worker.
A person's employment label does not determine the training required. The same activity and exposure conditions require the same competence and controls.
10.11.3 Induction Training
Before a person performs RF work or enters a Controlled Area, they should receive the information, training, and instruction required for their proposed activity and exposure category.
Initial training should address, as applicable:
- the nature of RF fields and the known health effects summarized in the applicable guidance;
- the exposure categories, exposure limits, and conditions for occupational exposure;
- the site's RF sources, maximum operating states, and relevant exposure assessments;
- Controlled Areas, exposure-limit boundaries, exclusion zones, signs, and access controls;
- isolation, engineering controls, administrative controls, and their verification;
- the correct use and limitations of personal RF monitors and other applicable equipment;
- safe work, authorization, communication, supervision, and stop-work procedures;
- emergency, incident, reporting, and suspected-overexposure procedures; and
- the procedures applying to pregnancy, medical devices, and metallic implants.
Where practicable, training should include the actual site, equipment, signs, access routes, controls, and realistic task scenarios rather than relying only on classroom information.
