10.5.6 Multiple RF Sources
Many modern communications sites contain numerous transmitters operating simultaneously.
A site may comply source by source yet require further assessment when sources operate together. The combined exposure should be evaluated using the applicable frequency-dependent simultaneous-source summation rules rather than by simple addition of unlike quantities.
Hazard identification should therefore include all RF sources affecting the work or public-access area, including sources owned or controlled by other organizations.
10.5.7 Maintenance Activities
Many RF incidents occur during maintenance rather than normal operation.
Maintenance may bring workers closer to antennas, alter barriers or shielding, require covers or waveguides to be opened, or change source operating states. These conditions can differ substantially from routine operation and must be assessed for each task.
The task assessment should identify the RF sources and operating conditions during preparation, isolation or power reduction, execution, testing, restoration, and return to service.
10.5.8 Changes To The Installation
Hazard identification is not a one-time activity.
Whenever equipment is added, transmitter power or traffic loading changes, antennas are relocated, frequencies change, or nearby structures are constructed, the exposure environment may also change. Temporary transmitters used for testing or emergency communications must likewise be included.
Consequently, hazard identification should form part of the organization's formal management of change process so that modifications cannot be introduced without reviewing their impact on RF safety.
