10.9.2 Types Of RF Safety Signs
Several types of safety sign may be used at an RF installation. Their shapes, colors, symbols, and meanings should follow the safety-sign standard applicable in the jurisdiction.
- Warning signs alert people to RF fields or an RF hazard and indicate that additional information or precautions may be required.
- Mandatory signs state an action that must be taken, such as obtaining authorization, confirming an isolation, following a permit, or carrying a specified personal RF monitor.
- Prohibition signs state what is not permitted, such as unauthorized entry or climbing while specified transmitters are operating.
- Information signs provide supporting details such as source identification, entry instructions, emergency contacts, or the name and contact details of the Responsible Person.
Using consistent, standardized signs throughout an organization improves recognition and reduces misunderstanding.
10.9.3 Controlled Area Signs
A Controlled Area must have documentation or signage that clearly identifies locations above the public and occupational exposure limits. Normal entry points should communicate the information needed for safe access. Depending on the site and the controls used, this may include:
- the presence of RF sources or fields;
- the Controlled Area or other boundary being entered;
- the applicable access restriction or exposure category;
- the Responsible Person and readily available contact details; and
- any authorization, source-state, supervision, or work conditions applying to entry.
Where appropriate, a sign may also direct people to the applicable RF Radiation Safety Plan, site information, or safe work procedure.
