10.10.6 Verification Before Entry
A source should not be assumed safe merely because a shutdown or isolation instruction has been issued.
Before access, an authorized person should verify that the specified controls and source states are in place and that no overlooked source can affect the work area.
Verification may include:
- positive confirmation from each source operator or control center;
- checking local and remote source-status indications;
- checking the identified isolation, lockout, and tagout points;
- confirming the arrangements with the Responsible Person;
- reviewing current operating conditions and simultaneous sources; and
- using an appropriate RF measurement or other independent check where required.
The required method should be specified in the procedure. Verification is particularly important at shared sites, with software-controlled or intermittent sources, and where several transmitters can affect the same area.
10.10.7 Working Near Energized Equipment
Some testing, fault finding, commissioning, and operational tasks may require work near energized RF sources. Such work should proceed only under a documented assessment and authorized procedure that keeps exposure within the applicable limits.
- Controls may include:
- down-powering, restricting the operating mode, or controlling beam direction;
- defined separation distances, work positions, and temporary exclusion zones;
- continuous supervision or a dedicated source-status watch;
- a correctly selected personal RF monitor as a supplementary warning;
- task duration controls where consistent with the applicable averaging requirements; and
- continuous coordination with the operators or control centers that can change the source state.
The reason energized work is necessary, the assessed exposure, the permitted source states, the controls, and the stop-work criteria should be documented. A personal RF monitor or time limit must not be used to justify otherwise noncompliant work.
