10.9.7 Temporary Signage
Maintenance, commissioning, antenna replacement, temporary transmitters, emergency repairs, and changing operating modes may temporarily alter RF boundaries or entry conditions.
Portable signs, barriers, and notices should identify the temporary boundary, the applicable source state, the required controls, and an appropriate contact. They should be removed or updated when the temporary arrangement ends so that obsolete instructions do not remain.
10.9.8 Sign Design
RF safety signs should comply with the occupational safety-sign requirements applicable in the jurisdiction. In Australia, RPS S-1 refers to AS 1319 for signs or notices used in the protection of the public.
Effective signs are:
- readily recognizable and unambiguous;
- legible from the distance at which a person must act;
- durable under the expected weather, ultraviolet, and workplace conditions;
- positioned so that they are encountered before the relevant boundary;
- illuminated or otherwise visible where necessary; and
- maintained in good condition.
Wording should be concise and state the required action. Detailed procedures are better provided in a permit, site instruction, or other controlled document referenced by the sign.
10.9.9 Inspection And Maintenance
Signs and markings are controls and must be inspected and maintained. Routine inspection should verify that:
- signs remain securely attached;
- colors and symbols remain clearly visible;
- wording remains legible;
- vegetation or stored materials do not obscure signs;
- barriers remain in place; and
- the information and boundary still match the current installation and source states.
The signage and markings should be reviewed whenever transmitter power, frequency, antenna configuration, operating modes, source ownership, access arrangements, or the exposure assessment changes.
