1.5.5 Scope Of RADHAZ In This Book

While all four categories of RF radiation hazard are important in particular operational environments, their significance varies according to the application.

Communications engineers, broadcast operators, telecommunications personnel, radar technicians, satellite operators, industrial users, and safety practitioners are concerned primarily with protecting people from excessive RF exposure. Consequently, the emphasis throughout this book is on the HERP. The scientific principles, exposure assessment methods, engineering standards, and safety management practices described in the following chapters are directed toward understanding, assessing, and controlling human exposure to RF electromagnetic fields.

The remaining RADHAZ categories—HERE, HERO, and HERF—are introduced to provide context and to illustrate the broader range of hazards that may arise in specialized operational environments. Although these topics are not examined in detail, they form part of the wider discipline of electromagnetic safety and are considered during the design and operation of many defense, aviation, maritime, and industrial systems.
