8.10.9 Combining Measurement And Calculation
Measurement, analytical calculation, and numerical computation are complementary. Measurements can confirm transmitter operation and external fields at accessible locations. Calculations can predict inaccessible or specified maximum conditions, explore alternative configurations, and estimate internal quantities that cannot normally be measured directly.
Comparisons should be made like-for-like: the same source configuration, operating state, location, field component, units, bandwidth, and spatial and temporal processing. Agreement at one point or frequency does not validate every aspect of a model. Material discrepancies should be investigated by checking the measurement system, source data, geometry, assumptions, and numerical convergence.
A staged assessment can begin with a conservative calculation, proceed to measurement where the field is accessible, and use validated numerical computation only where greater detail is needed. This approach concentrates effort on the factors that can affect the compliance decision while preserving a traceable relationship between assumptions, evidence, and conclusion.
