6.7 LOOKING AHEAD

Chapter 6 has followed RF energy from its source to the fields induced and the power or energy absorbed within the body. This completes the physical part of the progression, but it does not establish that an internal field or absorbed quantity produces a biological response, nor that any response is harmful.

Chapter 7 examines RF interaction with biological systems. It considers the mechanisms by which induced fields and absorbed energy can affect tissue, including electrostimulation at the lower end of the RF range and heating at higher frequencies. It distinguishes a detectable biological effect from an adverse health effect and reviews how experimental, epidemiological, and biophysical evidence is evaluated when exposure restrictions are developed.

Together, Chapters 6 and 7 provide the scientific foundation for the remainder of the book: source emissions lead to external exposure; external exposure produces internal fields and energy absorption quantified by RF dosimetry; and those internal physical conditions may lead to biological responses. Chapter 8 then applies this foundation to RF safety assessment, while later chapters address exposure standards and practical risk controls.
