1.3.4 Why RF Radiation Is Different
Although the word radiation is often associated with nuclear materials or medical X-rays, RF radiation is fundamentally different from ionizing radiation. The energy carried by individual RF photons is many orders of magnitude lower than that required to ionize atoms or break chemical bonds directly. Consequently, RF radiation cannot damage DNA through the ionization mechanisms associated with X-rays or gamma rays.
Instead, the principal established biological effects of RF exposure are electrical stimulation at the lower end of the RF spectrum and tissue heating resulting from the absorption of electromagnetic energy across most of the remaining RF range. Modern RF exposure guidelines are therefore based on preventing these established adverse health effects rather than on preventing ionization.
This distinction forms the scientific foundation of RF radiation safety and explains why the assessment methods, exposure limits, and safety standards discussed throughout this book differ fundamentally from those used for ionizing radiation.
