This book is designed to assist you develop the knowledge and skills needed to apply systems thinking and system dynamics modelling to management interventions to address complex problems.
By studying this book you will understand:
- the applicability of systems thinking and system dynamics modelling;
- the system dynamics modelling methodology, and each of the major process steps involved;
- what tools and techniques might be used to discover what you need to know about any given complex problem situation;
- the theoretical underpinnings of causal mapping and analysis;
- methods for analysing and documenting causal relationships and further developing these with creation of intervention strategies in mind;
- the specific tools and techniques of a modular approach to model building; and
- the practicalities of system dynamics modelling using Powersim™ Studio.
On completion, you will be able to:
- identify and map causal relationships using appropriate mapping techniques;
- test the logic and structure of causal maps;
- describe the interrelationships between critical elements of systems thinking and systems dynamics (both qualitative and quantitative aspects);
- correctly use causal loop diagrams, influence diagrams and stock-and-flow diagrams to aid problem conceptualisation;
- apply Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as an enabler to problem conceptualisation;
- apply Iterative and Interactive Strategy Development (IISD);
- systematically apply each of the process steps of system dynamics modelling, which in summary are:
- problem structuring—in which:
- the problem situation, or issue at hand, is defined; and
- the scope and boundaries of the study are identified.
- causal mapping and analysis—involving building conceptual models of the problem in the form of cause-and-effect diagrams,
- dynamic modelling—using qualitative techniques such as causal mapping and causal analysis during the conceptualisation phase to enhance the conceptual rigour and learning power produced by extending through to quantitative system dynamics modelling—when applied through group model building, these activities will greatly improve likelihood of unqualified support from key stakeholders, whose support will be essential for successful implementation of remedial strategies;
- scenario planning and modelling through which various policies and strategies are postulated and tested under varying external conditions;
- strategy implementation; and
- organisational learning—the most beneficial and enduring outcomes of systems thinking and system dynamics modelling are individual and organisational (team) learning, especially when brought about through simulation modelling enabling decision makers to test their own dynamic hypotheses and mental models;
- systematically utilise modules of system dynamics structure to build robust and highly valuable models; and
- utilise systems thinking and system dynamics modelling tools and techniques to formulate policy and strategy recommendations to address complex problems.
