4.2 OUTLINE OF REMAINING STEPS—FROM CONCEPTUAL MODEL TO ANALYTICAL MODEL

Through a series of steps culminating in Figure 4-11, we have developed a (relatively complete, top-down) conceptual model. This becomes our start point for building a quantitative system dynamics model to analyse the problem introduced at the beginning of the chapter. With experience, we would be able to recognise the structural elements of such a model and, therefore, we would be able to get to this point more quickly.

Now that we have developed the conceptual model, and each of the statements of requirement that describe the expected functioning of the model, we have a top-down (holistic) view of the population problem. In the steps that follow, this model will be decomposed and each of the necessary modules will be built. The modules will be integrated progressively and tested, with a fully functioning model being the result. A model designed to assist us in analysing Charmville’s greater problems would incorporate various sectors, and they would be added on an as-required basis (though architecting of the model must allow for this from the outset).

The model so far described will be used to help us analyse the population problem. As we discover more about the dynamics of the problem, it will be necessary to add functionality to the model. This is a normal progression in building system dynamics models.
