2.3.1 The Model—Its Role And Characteristics

We focus primarily on building models that serve as vehicles for learning about and interpreting selected parts of the real world. Williams (2002:34-35) explains that a model represents or describes perceptions of a real (systemic) problem. A model is a simplification. It uses formal, theoretically based language of concepts and their relationships. It enables manipulation of these entities in order to facilitate management, control or understanding.

A good model should:

• be empirically based;
• be theoretically sound;
• be coherent;
• be simplified to a requisite degree, that is, be just sufficient for its intended purpose;
• address the complexity of the (real, systemic) problem;
• add value; and
• impact upon decisions.
