4.3 SUMMARY

In this chapter each of the steps of building a system dynamics model were demonstrated. The overall structure of the model was described and each of the variables defined. The model was then broken down to individual modules, each of which was described and variables defined. Each module was then constructed. The model was then assembled through the integration of each of the modules, always ensuring that the originally specified requirements for the model were being achieved.

A range of possible strategies for managing the population of Charmville were then examined, and briefly evaluated.

The possible future developments of the model were considered. In Chapter 5, a model will be built and extended into the form of an array version. This will demonstrate the utility of array models.

A logical next step would be to extend the Charmville population model in this way, taking into account the various age-groups. This would significantly increase the utility of the model.

Vital activities in model building are verification and validation. In this chapter, these were mentioned but not demonstrated in detail. In Chapter 5, verification of models is demonstrated. Verification and validation are discussed further in Chapter 6.
