1.12 SUMMARY
In this chapter we have seen how assemblies of simple component parts can produce complex systemic behaviour and that we need ways of analysing such problems that make the best use of our cognitive capability. The problem-solving approach we will apply requires capability to work together with a clear understanding of the nature of systemic problems, combining a top-down (systems engineering) approach and the use of modules of system dynamics modelling structure.
The steps of system dynamics modelling process were explained. How this relates to the basic systems engineering “Vee” Model was explained with specific reference to elicitation of requirements for building a model, managing those requirements, ensuring traceability of requirements through all stages of model building through testing, integration and demonstration of a model which meets the stated requirements. Details of each of the stages described are provided in subsequent chapters.
Next, Chapter 2 explains the fundamentals of this problem-solving methodology which focuses on the modules of system dynamics structure.
