6 APPLICATION OF IISD: A TUTORIAL FOR REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS

We have argued that the human mind is ill-adapted to conceptualising and mentally simulating complex problems where delayed feedback exists. It was also argued that when we set about solving complex problems we must take into account the different perspectives of the various stakeholders. Working through such problems following an action research approach, involving stakeholders as far as possible were advocated as principles of method.

This chapter outlines how Iterative and Interactive Strategy Development (IISD) might be used to aid development of risk-management strategies for engineering management. A management problem is presented and analysed through the medium of a tutorial. On the surface, this problem appears easy to solve. In practice, it has proven otherwise. Logical and well-intentioned management interventions attempted to date have proven ineffective. Some interventions resulted in counter-intuitive changes, so it is now clear that a different approach is needed.

The principles of method, described in the preceding chapter, are demonstrated through the vehicle of a tutorial. The tutorial takes us through problem conceptualisation, identification of options, and development of risk-management strategies. A set of pitfalls and pointers is compiled to guide the practical application of the tools and techniques demonstrated.
