6.4.11 FM Generation And Detection
FM can be generated by two types of methods, the direct method and the indirect method. These methods are best explained in the context of the FM transmitter and are therefore discussed in Chapter 9.
A frequency detector, often called a discriminator, produces an output voltage that varies linearly with the instantaneous frequency of the input. Although there are many different circuit designs for frequency detection, the two most common types of methods involve FM-to-AM conversion or phase-shift conversion.
