Order
State variables are a collection of variables that we choose to monitor to inform us about the status of a system (Sage and Rouse, 1999: 939). In system dynamics modelling stocks (levels or accumulators) are state variables. Unlike rate variables whose values return to zero when the simulation of a model is halted, state variables retain their values. In this way they represent the extant state of the problem being simulated.
