Because multiple stations share a common radio channel, WLAN performance depends both on radio propagation characteristics and on the medium-access mechanisms used to coordinate transmissions. We therefore first examine the frequency bands and channel structure over which WLANs operate before describing the CSMA/CA-based access procedures defined in IEEE 802.11.
