Direct-broadcast Satellite Service (DBS)
The direct-broadcast satellite service (DBS), also known as broadcasting satellite service (BSS), refers to satellite networks that transmit broadcast television and radio signals from a central uplink Earth station to a large population of relatively simple receive-only Earth stations. These receive stations may serve as distribution heads for cable television systems or be installed directly in homes for direct-to-home (DTH) reception.
DBS systems typically operate in higher-frequency bands, such as Ku-band, and use high satellite transmit powers and focused coverage beams to enable reception with small, low-cost antennas. The service model is optimized for one-way distribution of content to large audiences rather than two-way communications.
