Chapter 2: THE SOURCE
This chapter examines information sources in detail. We introduce the concept of information content, randomness, entropy, and statistical structure. These ideas form the quantitative foundation upon which source coding is built in Chapter 3. Without understanding the nature of the source, it is impossible to determine how efficiently it may be represented—or how reliably it must later be protected.
