15.7.8 Looking Ahead
The Internet continues to evolve rapidly.
Future developments are expected to include:
- higher-capacity optical networks;
- increasing deployment of IPv6;
- tighter integration of terrestrial and satellite communications;
- artificial intelligence-assisted network management;
- software-defined networking;
- cloud-native communication services; and
- continuing growth of the Internet of Things.
Despite these technological advances, the underlying principles remain remarkably consistent. Devices require logical addresses, routers determine paths through interconnected networks, and layered protocols enable reliable communication between applications.
