15.7.6 Security
Because the Internet is an open public network, security has become an essential design consideration.
Modern Internet communication relies upon several complementary mechanisms to protect users and information.
These include:
- authentication of users and devices;
- encryption of transmitted information;
- digital certificates;
- firewalls;
- intrusion detection systems; and
- virtual private networks.
Although complete security can never be guaranteed, these technologies allow sensitive information such as financial transactions, medical records, and confidential business communications to be transmitted safely across public networks.
