15.7.7 The Internet Of Things
Internetworking is no longer limited to computers and smartphones.
Increasingly, everyday devices are being connected to the Internet, including:
- environmental sensors;
- industrial equipment;
- smart electricity meters;
- vehicles;
- household appliances;
- agricultural monitoring systems; and
- medical devices.
Many of these applications employ Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technologies, such as LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, which are optimized for battery-powered devices transmitting relatively small amounts of information over long distances.
Together, these technologies are enabling the continued expansion of the Internet into almost every aspect of modern life.
