15.7.2 Internet Services

Although the underlying communication infrastructure is common, users experience the Internet through a wide variety of applications.

These include:

• web browsing;
• electronic mail;
• cloud computing;
• file transfer;
• voice over IP (VoIP);
• video conferencing;
• media streaming;
• online gaming;
• remote access; and
• industrial and machine-to-machine communication.

The layered protocol architecture allows new applications to be developed without requiring changes to the underlying communication infrastructure.
