Transport protocols complete the process of end-to-end communication. The Internet Protocol ensures that packets reach the correct destination computer, while the Transport Layer ensures that those packets are delivered to the appropriate application running on that computer.
Together, IP and the transport protocols provide the universal communication framework upon which web browsing, electronic mail, cloud computing, video streaming, online gaming, and countless other Internet services depend.
The following section examines how these technologies combine to form the global Internet and the communication services that operate upon it.
