Situational Awareness: Perceiving, Understanding, and Anticipating a Changing Environment

Situational awareness is the capacity to perceive relevant elements of an environment, understand what they mean, and anticipate how the situation may develop. It enables people and teams to connect observations with goals, risks, constraints, and possible action.

Military systems support awareness by integrating sensor reports, intelligence, positions, status information, plans, and communications into displays or shared operational pictures. Sharing can help dispersed participants coordinate, identify discrepancies, and reduce avoidable delays.

A common display does not ensure identical understanding. People attend to different features, possess different expertise, work at different levels of command, and may interpret ambiguous evidence in different ways. Data can also be incomplete, delayed, deceptive, or presented with misleading confidence.

Effective situational awareness combines technology with training, questioning, communication, and judgment. Systems should make uncertainty and source quality visible, avoid overwhelming users, and support revision as the environment and adversary change.
