How Does RSRP Measure Cellular Signal Strength?
Received Signal Reference Power (RSRP) is a standardized measurement used in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5G New Radio (NR) cellular networks to indicate the strength of a received radio signal. It is one of the principal measurements used by mobile devices to select, monitor, and change between serving base stations as users move through a cellular network.
The basic principle is straightforward. Cellular base stations continuously transmit known reference signals that allow mobile devices to estimate radio propagation conditions. Rather than measuring the total received power across the entire channel, RSRP measures only the average power of these reference signals. Because the measurement excludes most interference and non-reference transmissions, it provides a consistent indication of how strongly the base station's signal is being received.
A useful analogy is listening for a tuning fork in an orchestra. Instead of judging the loudness of the entire performance, you listen only for the distinctive note produced by the tuning fork. That single note provides a reliable reference even though many other instruments are playing simultaneously. Similarly, RSRP measures only the designated reference signals transmitted by the cellular base station.
RSRP is normally expressed in decibel-milliwatts (dBm) and is always a negative value because the received signals are extremely weak. Typical values include:
–80 dBm or stronger: Excellent signal.
–80 to –90 dBm: Very good signal.
–90 to –100 dBm: Good signal.
–100 to –110 dBm: Fair signal.
Below –110 dBm: Weak signal, with increasing likelihood of reduced data rates or dropped connections.
Network operators use RSRP extensively for radio planning, coverage prediction, drive testing, and optimisation. Mobile devices also use RSRP during cell selection, cell reselection, and handover to determine when a neighbouring base station offers a stronger signal than the current serving cell.
It is important to distinguish RSRP from Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). RSSI measures the total received power within the receiver bandwidth, including the desired signal, interference from neighbouring cells, and thermal noise. RSRP, by contrast, measures only the power of the reference signals and therefore provides a more consistent indication of cellular coverage. Likewise, RSRP differs from the Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ), which combines RSRP with RSSI to indicate signal quality, and from the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), which measures the quality of the received radio channel.
Today, Received Signal Reference Power is one of the most important measurements used in LTE and 5G networks. Together with RSRQ and SINR, it enables mobile devices and network operators to assess radio coverage, optimise network performance, and ensure reliable communication as users move throughout the cellular network.
