What Are Natural and Human-Made RF Sources?
Where Does Radio-Frequency Energy Come From?
A radio-frequency (RF) source is any natural process or human-made device that produces electric and magnetic fields within the RF part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The distinction describes the source's origin, not whether its fields are automatically safe or hazardous.
Extraterrestrial RF emissions include the small RF component of radiation from the Sun and the cosmic microwave background. The atmosphere and ionosphere absorb, attenuate, or reflect much of this radiation before it reaches the Earth's surface.
Natural terrestrial sources include thermal emission from the Earth and the impulsive electromagnetic fields produced by lightning. Their frequency content, field strength, and duration vary widely, but natural RF power densities are generally small compared with fields close to many modern transmitters.
Human-made RF sources support communications, broadcasting, radar, navigation, sensing, industrial processing, medicine, scientific research, consumer devices, and wireless power transfer. Their operating frequencies, powers, modulation, duty cycles, and antenna characteristics vary over many orders of magnitude.
Some sources intentionally radiate through an antenna. Others couple energy through an applicator, coil, electrode, or enclosed process. Electronic equipment may also produce unintended emissions, although compliant equipment is designed to control them.
Human-made sources dominate most practical RF exposure assessments, while natural background fields remain important in radio astronomy, remote sensing, propagation studies, and measurements of weak signals. Source classification alone does not indicate the magnitude of exposure.
A safety assessment therefore identifies each relevant source and evaluates the fields that can reach people under realistic conditions. Transmitter power, frequency, antenna pattern, duty cycle, distance, reflections, shielding, location, and exposure duration all matter; neither natural nor human-made origin is a substitute for assessment.
