IEEE C95.2-2018—Radio-Frequency Energy and Current-Flow Symbols

IEEE C95.2-2018 specifies symbols for warning about potentially hazardous radio-frequency energy and current-flow hazards over the frequency range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. It also provides guidance on using those symbols on warning signs and labels.

The standard gives RF safety practitioners a recognizable visual language for hazards that may not be apparent to sight, hearing, or touch. It addresses hazard communication; it does not set human-exposure limits, establish compliance boundaries, or prescribe a complete RF safety program.

Purpose and Scope

The RF-energy symbol identifies the presence of potentially hazardous RF energy. The current-flow symbol addresses hazards associated with RF current, including situations in which contact with conductive objects can produce shock, spark discharge, or localized RF burns.

The 2018 edition is an active IEEE standard and superseded IEEE C95.2-1999. The symbols are intended for signs and labels associated with RF sources, equipment, areas, and conditions where a clear warning can help people recognize the hazard and follow the required controls.

Use on Signs and Labels

A symbol should be prominent, legible, and suited to the viewing distance and environment. It can be combined with signal words, explanatory text, access restrictions, mandatory actions, or equipment instructions so that the reader understands both the hazard and the required response.

Placement should correspond to the assessed hazard: for example, at an access point, boundary, enclosure, equipment panel, or conductive object. The sign or label should remain accurate for the source states and work conditions that can occur, including testing, maintenance, temporary operation, and remote control.

Relationship to Australian Requirements

In Australia, IEEE C95.2 can provide RF-specific symbol content, while AS 1319-1994 provides the workplace safety-sign framework required in relevant applications. Using an IEEE symbol does not by itself demonstrate compliance with the Australian safety-sign standard, ARPANSA RPS S-1, or another jurisdictional requirement.

The RF Radiation Safety Plan should define where signs and labels are required, what each means, who may enter or operate the equipment, and what action follows a warning. Shared sites also require consistent communication among source owners, contractors, workers, visitors, and the Responsible Person.

Use and Limitations

IEEE C95.2 does not determine whether exposure exceeds a reference level or basic restriction. That conclusion comes from the applicable exposure standard and a suitable measurement, calculation, or modeling assessment. The resulting boundary and controls then determine the location and message of the sign or label.

Symbols and signs are administrative controls. They cannot reduce field strength or prevent energization, and they should not be used in place of elimination, isolation, engineering controls, barriers, interlocks, or verified access arrangements. They remain valuable when integrated with those controls and kept visible, current, understood, and maintained.
