Martin Heidegger (1889-1976): The Philosopher Who Asked How Beings Become Intelligible

Martin Heidegger was a German philosopher whose work reopened the question of being inherited from Aristotle and transformed by Immanuel Kant: not simply which entities exist, but how anything becomes intelligible as the kind of thing it is. His analysis influenced phenomenology, existentialism, hermeneutics, architecture, theology, and philosophy of science.

That influence cannot be separated from his political record. Heidegger joined the Nazi Party, served as rector of Freiburg University under the regime, and wrote antisemitic passages. His philosophy must be read alongside the uses he made of it, the exclusions within it, and his failure to offer an adequate public reckoning after the war.

Freiburg, Phenomenology, and Being and Time

Heidegger was born in Messkirch on 26 September 1889. He studied theology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Freiburg, became an assistant to Edmund Husserl, and taught at Marburg before succeeding Husserl at Freiburg in 1928.

Being and Time, published in 1927, established his reputation but remained unfinished. Heidegger argued that Western philosophy had concentrated on particular beings while forgetting the question of what it means for beings to be. He approached that question through an analysis of human existence.

Dasein and Being-in-the-World

Heidegger called human existence Dasein, the being for whom its own being is an issue. Dasein is not first an isolated mind looking outward at objects. It is already being-in-the-world: engaged with tasks, places, other people, language, equipment, and inherited possibilities.

This challenges the subject-object starting point associated with Rene Descartes. A meaningful world is not assembled from neutral data by a detached spectator. Practical involvement provides the background within which observation, representation, and decision making become possible.

Ready-to-Hand and Present-at-Hand

Equipment is normally encountered as ready-to-hand within an activity. A hammer refers to nails, timber, a workshop, skill, and a purpose; in fluent use it does not appear primarily as an object with measured properties. Breakdown can make it conspicuous and expose the network of relations on which the activity depends.

Present-at-hand describes a more detached encounter with something as an object possessing properties. Scientific measurement powerfully develops this mode, but Heidegger denied that it exhausts intelligibility. Instruments and data remain situated within practices that determine what counts as a relevant object, signal, or result.

Care, Temporality, and Finitude

Heidegger described Dasein through care: existence is stretched between inherited conditions, present involvement, and possibilities towards which it projects itself. Human time is therefore not only a sequence of identical moments measured by a clock; past, present, and future organise one another in lived activity.

Being-towards-death names the individual's relation to a possibility that cannot be delegated and that closes all other possibilities. Confronting finitude can loosen the anonymous expectations of 'the they' and support a more owned existence, though Heidegger did not turn authenticity into a conventional moral theory.

The Turn, Language, and Truth

In later work Heidegger placed less emphasis on the analytic of Dasein and more on the historical ways in which being is disclosed. He examined Greek philosophy, poetry, art, and language, treating truth not only as correct assertion but as an unconcealment within which things can appear.

This account resembles R. G. Collingwood's attention to presuppositions and Mircea Eliade's interest in modes of disclosure, while differing sharply in method and subject. Heidegger sought a history of being; Collingwood reconstructed situated thought through evidence; Eliade compared religious worlds.

Technology and Enframing

In 'The Question Concerning Technology', Heidegger argued that modern technology is not merely a collection of devices or a neutral means. Its characteristic mode of revealing, which he called enframing, orders beings as standing-reserve: resources made available for calculation, storage, and use.

A river can appear primarily as potential hydroelectric power, a forest as timber inventory, and people as human resources. The danger is not machinery itself but the dominance of one mental model that makes every alternative disclosure seem unreal. Systems thinking can expose interdependence, yet it too becomes reductive if the world is treated only as variables for control.

Science, Ontology, and Models

Heidegger distinguished ontic questions about particular entities from ontological questions about the ways entities can be. Classical mechanics and quantum mechanics make testable ontic claims, while questions about objecthood, causality, measurement, and the disclosure of nature examine the framework in which those claims become intelligible.

This does not invalidate science or license indifference to evidence. It asks investigators to recognise that modelling and simulation select boundaries, quantities, and purposes. A model reveals aspects of a system precisely by leaving others in the background; methodological power and ontological completeness are not the same.

Nazism and Antisemitism

Heidegger joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and, as rector of Freiburg, aligned the university with the new regime. He resigned the rectorship in 1934 but remained a party member until 1945. After the war he was temporarily prohibited from teaching.

The posthumously published Black Notebooks include antisemitic passages and intensified debate about connections between his politics and his history of being. Interpretations differ, but neither philosophical stature nor later influence excuses political commitment, persecution-era silence, or evasive self-presentation.

Influence and Critical Legacy

Heidegger died in Freiburg on 26 May 1976. He influenced Jean-Paul Sartre, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Hannah Arendt, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Derrida, and many others, while his concepts entered fields far beyond academic philosophy.

His enduring challenge is to ask how a world must already matter before facts, tools, and technologies can appear within it. His enduring warning is embodied by his own life: a critique of technological domination does not guarantee sound political judgement. Intellectual depth must remain answerable to evidence, institutions, and the human consequences of ideas.
