RF warning signs are commonly seen at broadcasting stations, communications towers, radar installations, and satellite earth stations. This FAQ explains why these signs are used, what they are intended to communicate, and how they fit into an overall RF radiation safety program.
Why Are Warning Signs Used Around RF Transmitters?
Anyone who has visited a broadcasting station, communications tower, radar installation, or satellite earth station has probably seen signs warning of the presence of RF electromagnetic fields. These signs often display distinctive symbols together with statements such as RF Hazard, Radio Frequency Radiation, or Restricted Area.
To someone unfamiliar with RF technology, such signs may appear alarming. In reality, they serve the same purpose as warning signs associated with high-voltage equipment, hazardous chemicals, confined spaces, or moving machinery: they identify a potential hazard so that appropriate precautions can be taken before work begins.
The presence of a warning sign does not necessarily mean that a dangerous situation exists at that location. Rather, it indicates that personnel should understand the environment before entering or commencing work.
What Is the Purpose of RF Warning Signs?
The principal purpose of RF warning signs is to increase hazard awareness.
Unlike many workplace hazards, RF electromagnetic fields are normally invisible, odourless, and silent. A person approaching a transmitting antenna usually receives no obvious indication that an RF field is present. Consequently, workers cannot rely on their senses alone to recognize an area where exposure may require assessment or control.
Warning signs provide an immediate visual indication that RF electromagnetic fields may exist nearby and that established workplace procedures should be followed.
In this respect, RF signage forms part of an organization's overall hazard communication strategy.
What Information Do RF Signs Provide?
Although the appearance of RF warning signs varies between organizations and countries, they generally communicate one or more of the following messages:
- RF electromagnetic fields may be present.
- Access may be restricted to authorized personnel.
- Special procedures may apply before entering the area.
- Transmitters may need to be isolated before maintenance begins.
- Personal RF monitors or other protective measures may be required.
Some organizations also display contact information, site-specific instructions, or the boundaries of controlled RF exposure areas.
The exact wording is less important than ensuring that workers immediately recognize the presence of an RF hazard and know where to obtain further guidance.
Why Are Some RF Sites Covered with Warning Signs?
Large communications sites often contain many different RF systems operating simultaneously.
A single tower may support broadcasting antennas, mobile telephone base stations, microwave links, emergency-service communications, and navigation equipment. Some antennas operate continuously, while others transmit only intermittently. Field strengths may also vary considerably from one location to another.
Because of this complexity, warning signs provide a simple and consistent means of reminding personnel that the electromagnetic environment may require assessment before work is undertaken.

Why Don't We See RF Warning Signs Everywhere?
People often notice RF warning signs on communications towers but not near everyday wireless devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, or Bluetooth equipment.
The reason is that safety signage is determined by the workplace or operational environment rather than by the mere presence of an RF transmitter.
Consumer products are designed and tested to comply with recognized RF exposure standards during normal use and therefore do not generally require hazard signage. By contrast, high-power occupational RF installations may contain areas where maintenance personnel could approach transmitting antennas closely enough for specialized procedures to become necessary.
Consequently, warning signs are most commonly associated with occupational environments rather than ordinary public locations.
Are Warning Signs Enough?
No.
Warning signs represent only one component of an effective RF Radiation Safety Plan. By themselves, they do not prevent RF overexposure.
Effective RF safety also depends upon engineering controls, safe system design, exposure assessment, work procedures, lock-out and permit systems, personnel training, supervision, and periodic review of workplace hazards.
In modern safety management, warning signs are regarded as an administrative control. Wherever practicable, they are supported by more effective engineering measures such as restricted access, physical barriers, interlocks, transmitter shutdown procedures, and antenna design that reduces unnecessary exposure.
